Immediate danger or signs of postpartum psychosis

Hallucinations, delusions, severe confusion, mania or immediate safety concerns after birth need emergency assessment. Arrange for a trusted adult to remain with and care for mother and baby.

Call 911

Or go to an emergency department. Do not wait for an app, an email reply or a two-week symptom threshold.

A suicide or mental-health crisis

Call or text 988

Ongoing symptoms or trouble coping

Contact your obstetric, primary-care or mental-health team. Persistent or worsening symptoms and inability to sleep despite opportunity deserve attention. You do not need to manage this alone.

Unwanted thoughts are not the same as intent

Frightening intrusive thoughts with preserved insight are different from an intention to act or loss of touch with reality. A qualified clinician should help assess the distinction. Seek urgent help when safety is uncertain.

Outside the US, use local emergency and crisis services. NHS information about postpartum psychosis explains the emergency distinction. These organizations do not endorse Brighter Postpartum.
