Small perspective games for the messy days

A game can make a skill easier to try. It is not automatically equivalent to a researched therapy course.

The important distinction

Do not dispute real abuse, poverty or medical problems as thinking errors. Do not use autonomous reframing for delusions or trauma exposure.

Positive-affect treatment is useful inspiration, not app validation

Population and setting
98 non-perinatal adults with low positive affect and depression/anxiety; fifteen therapy sessions.
What was found
Composite clinical improvement favored positive-affect treatment, with a small between-group advantage. Separate positive-affect and interviewer-anhedonia outcomes did not establish superiority.
Limits and applicability
Non-perinatal therapist-delivered intervention. No claim that a one-minute exercise duplicates it.
How directly does this apply?
non-perinatal; therapist-delivered
Gap between the study and our product
Design and measure anticipation, enjoyment and later recollection separately from depressive symptoms.

Self-guided skills can help selected parents, but dropout matters

Population and setting
Be a Mom: 1,053 higher-risk postpartum women randomized to program or wait-list control.
What was found
Depression symptom change favored the program (-3.35 versus -1.48); anxiety symptoms also improved more.
Limits and applicability
Post-assessment completion differed substantially (267/542 versus 445/511). Bundled intervention; symptom change is not proof of universal prevention or an isolated compassion effect.
How directly does this apply?
direct-perinatal; attrition-sensitive
Gap between the study and our product
Make use low-friction and report who disengages; do not report only successful completers.

Compassion work is promising but not a one-line cure

Population and setting
48 women with PPD; eight-week group compassion-focused therapy versus wait-list.
What was found
Self-esteem, rumination and loneliness outcomes favored the intervention.
Limits and applicability
Small trial with passive comparison and selected endpoints. It does not prove remission or validate mantras alone.
How directly does this apply?
direct-perinatal; small trial
Gap between the study and our product
Use believable, kind language and avoid unconditional positive claims the parent cannot believe.

What does a useful prompt look like?

Name the fact, notice the interpretation, choose a fairer view, then identify useful action or real support.

Use this as information, not an assessment

Symptoms or concerns deserve appropriate professional care. Severe or worsening symptoms should not wait for an app, a quiz or a two-week threshold.
