Evidence and support

Mindfulness, meditation and yoga after birth

Some trials and reviews are encouraging, while others are inconclusive. These can be optional coping practices, not compulsory emotional work or proven universal prevention.

The important distinction

Studies differ in duration, baseline symptoms, guidance, comparators and outcomes. A two-minute audio is not automatically equivalent to a tested course.

Mindfulness is a reasonable optional adjunct

Population and setting
Online perinatal mindfulness review: 23 RCTs, 2,725 participants; contrasting reviews exist.
What was found
One review reported depressive symptoms SMD −0.53; another found no significant pooled EPDS difference.
Limits and applicability
Formats, populations and study quality differ. A 90-second prompt is not equivalent to a complete studied course.

Yoga evidence is encouraging but small

Population and setting
57 postpartum women in an eight-week yoga versus wait-list trial.
What was found
Symptom improvements favored yoga.
Limits and applicability
Small sample and passive control; no universal remission estimate. Postpartum physical restrictions still apply.

What happens when a practice feels worse?

Stop, choose something else, or reach a qualified professional. Skipping a practice is not failing the program.

Use this as information, not an assessment

Symptoms or concerns deserve appropriate professional care. Severe or worsening symptoms should not wait for an app, a quiz or a two-week threshold.
